Indoor Athletics Action

Below are a selection of photos from the recent Year 5 and Year 6 indoor athletics competition at Abraham Guest Academy.

Y4 Tag Rugby League – 2nd Place

Our Year 4 Tag Rugby Team performed tremendously well at the recent West Wigan competition, making it all the way to the final in a competition that posed some exciting teams. Our team was a combination of experience, inexperience and sheer dogged determination. Some early thrilling matches saw the team placed second in our group, behind an excellent St. Cuthbert’s team. We then went on to beat Highfield St. Matthew’s in a pulsating extra time quarter final before beating St. Wilfrid’s in a “Golden Try” play-off in the semi-final – the lead changing hands on at least four occasions!

We faced St. Cuthbert’s once again in the final. It was a very exciting match with all the thrills and spills of Super League. After having two of our tries disallowed for diving over the line, St. Cuthbert’s scored a “Golden Try” winner to run out 1-0 winners in an exceptionally close final.

We we are exceptionally proud of the team’s efforts and know that this team will go from strength to strength. Thanks for all of the support from our families who came out to cheer the children on to the end.

Y5 and Y6 Indoor Athletics Competition – 2nd Place

Our indoor athletics teams continue to perform outstandingly well at the West Wigan competitions. In a field of 16 schools, our team came in 2nd place to an outstanding St.Wilfrid’s team. All the children performed to the best of their ability with our chest push team, speed bounce team and parlaaf teams being scored as overall champs of their respective events. What was especially pleasing was the fact that half of this years team was made up of Year 5 children! Next year is one full of hope with the ultimate goal of finishing as the 1st placed team. Thanks goes to all of the team who made us very proud once again and thanks to Mrs. White for supporting the event and the children.

Greater Manchester Y5/Y6 Cross Country Championships

A huge well done to both Joseph Pennington (Y6) and Bobby Fenlon (Y5) who represented Wigan Borough at the Cross Country Championships in February. Both boys performed superbly in a field of over 200 athletes. Joseph ended in the top 30 whilst Bobby ended in the top 80, both boys contributing to the overall 3rd place position for the Wigan Borough Team – only beaten by the very large boroughs of Trafford and Manchester. Well done boys. We are so proud of your achievements!

Wigan Warriors Rugby at Mab’s Cross

Last half term our Year 5 Classes were visited by the community coaches from Wigan Warriors. Our children had half a term of tag rugby coaching which provided staff and children with some fantastic ideas for developing the skills of evasion, passing and kicking. Our children had a wonderful time each week and really grew in confidence. A huge “thank you” goes to Joel Smith and his coaching team.

Year 2 Basketball Lessons in Action

Some super basketball skills in action in Year 2 this week. The children having been playing mini competitions to put their dribbling, passing, shooting and defensive skills into practice. Some excellent team work, fair play and determination throughout. Well done all. We have already spotted some talent for our future basketball teams!

Year 5 and Year 6 Basketball Competition

Great show of skill and determination last night from both of our impressive basketball teams who BOTH made it through to the semi-finals before being beaten by the eventual finalists St Mary and St John and New fold Primary School.

Both teams performed brilliantly in the group stages with identical records of all wins bar one. This meant they both left the group stages as runners up. Mab’s Cross A Team narrowly lost their semi-final to a “Golden Goal” winner by St Mary and St John whilst our B Team sadly went down to a very strong Newfold team, who ran out eventual winners of the entire competition.

Amazingly, both teams played one another in the final game of the competition. A tightly fought match saw the A Team eventually running out narrow winners to our B Team by 2-0. Team spirit was there for all to hear on the bus home as both teams sang along together.

Well done one to all of the players, especially Thomas Wright and Muhammad Abassi who were very late inclusions into the teams. The passing, dribbling and defence were excellent from both teams and the future looks bright for basketball at Mab’s Cross. Thanks also goes to Mrs Bevan and Mr Kaaria for their support and guidance for the B Team.

A Team: Codi, Olivia, Georgia, Joseph, Otis, Kian, and Ellis.

B Team: Emily, Phoebe, Lexi, Muhammad, Ellis, Nathan, Thomas and Tyler.

Y4, Y5 and Y6 Wigan Cross Country Championships

What an incredible team effort witnessed by all supporters today! We took two strong teams of boys and girls – 24 children in total – to today’s cross country event. We were particularly proud of the fact that many of our competing children were actually from Years 5 and even from Year 4.

Both the boys and the girls teams showed true grit and determination in what was quite typical cross-country weather. A rough estimate suggested that approximately 300 children took part with Mab’s Cross running out with the Best Boys Team in West Wigan and the 2nd Best Overall Team when the organisers added together both the boys and the girls teams scores.

Notable mention goes to Joseph Pennington and Bobby Fenlon who came in the top 20 boys and are now likely to represent Wigan West at the Greater Manchester Cross Country Championships. Joshua Phillips sadly missed the cut by a single position, ending up in 21st position.

A huge well done to Daniel Awodumila, Lewis Holding, Tom Unsworth and Ellie Hill who raced in the Year 6 race despite the fact that they are Year 4 children. Daniel was 32nd fastest boy overall, whilst Ellie Hill was 34th fastest girl overall.

Also a huge thank you to Chloe Ann Boland who stepped in at the very last minute to replace Anna Heaton Wilding, and actually ended as one of our fastest girls.

And a promise is a promise…the pizza is on it’s way for everyone in the team!

Sporting Success with our Sainsbury’s Games Silver Award

I am very proud to announce that we continue to move forward with our sporting provision. In 2014-15 we were awarded the Sainsbury’s Games Bronze Award, however we are now proud to announce that Mab’s Cross Primary School have gone one step further and have been awarded the Silver Award for our sporting provision for 2015-16.

Our aim is improve our provision year-on-year and this award would testify to that. A huge thank you and well done must go to all of our hard-working staff who deliver quality lessons and extra-curricular clubs, to our external partners (especially Skillwise Sports) and, of course, our very talented children and supportive families.

Numbers at our many sporting clubs continue to rise year-on-year, we have competed in more intra and inter-school competitions than ever before and our success at such competitions continues.

Year 4 and 5 Swimming Finals

Another great display from the swimming team who continued to perform to the very best of their abilities. 6 very impressive teams gathered today at Leigh Sports Village for a highly competitive occasion. Both the boys and the girls made the school and the vocal supporters very proud indeed, eventually finishing as the 2nd best swimming team in Wigan West and the 4th best team in the entire Wigan Borough. 36 schools competed for the title with our excellent eight surpassing all expectations. Well done all for your efforts, determination and your never-give-up attitude. It was great to see so many spectators come out once again to offer their unwavering support.
